PERIODONTAL VACCINE
I am recommending the periodontal vaccine to dogs weighing under twenty-five pounds and large breeds with predisposition (Greyhound, Basset, Boxer). Since this is a new vaccine, it is preferable not to give it at the same time as the rest of the vaccines. When dogs come in for heartworm testing they can receive the first dose of periodontal vaccine. The booster on it can then be later in the year with the rest of the vaccines…that way you would know if the vaccine caused a problem. Since the vaccine is of help in the future years, the urgency to bring the dog back a few weeks later for a booster is not crucial, in my opinion. I explain that it is like taking a vitamin or calcium to prevent bone loss, the benefit is not immediate, but down the road. It is important to understand the pet still needs his teeth cleaned.
